Hrm, battleships, by virtue of how many fitting slots they have, are pretty much the most versatile ships in the game already.
What you seem to be looking for is versatility without having to refit
You can do this to some degree with a battleship already, but not to the extent that you seem to look for.
As an example, let's take the Apocalypse. Fat slow lumbering beast. Decent range, massive armor and capacitor. I rarely, if ever, have heard of anyone fitting cruise missile launchers on them, but you can (and I do). The monster capacitor bank on the ship easily allows usage of energy neutralizers. The ship can also carry 5 light and 5 medium drones. Large smartbombs are easy to fit and budget energy for as well.
for mission running, I mount 6 large pulse laser II's and two caldari cruise missile launchers on my Apoc, two Amarr Navy large armor reppers, four amarr navy hardeners, a damage control 2, and three cap recharger 2's three Cap recharge rigs. The last midslot is either a target painter or an afterburner.
Yes, I'm a 37 million sp character, but you could do the same with a 15 million sp character - I have lots of skills that do not support this battleship build.
Granted, this is NOT a pvp setup, but with some adjustment, it easily could do what you want, and be versatile. swap the three cap recharge rigs with something more pvp oriented (buffer tank & resists/repair bonus), and drop one of the armor reppers for some buffer tank or an EANM 2 / faction EANM. Substitute a Cap Booster in mid. Maybe drop one t2 pulse for a neut. Carry all four damage types of cruise guided AND FOF missiles.
This setup will allow you to engage pretty much anything. Sure, you won't be the best sniper, or the best DPS, but you should be able to get some licks in, and any frigate getting into neut range will be very unhappy when you get lock, deply the drones, drop their cap to zero, and pop a couple faction cruise missiles on them.
However, most experienced PVP players will look at a mixed damage ship like what I described above and tell you it's an ugly PVP fit. And it is, because ships in EVE pvp tend to capitalize on their strengths, rather than be versatile.
Well, I've said my piece - wait, is that Veldspar over there? Woot! |
